Anticipation Alert: The Collector 3 (2019)

About 10 years ago, a little movie called The Collector came onto the horror scene and honestly surprised me.  There was a slick likeness to the Saw franchise (the movie was actually shopped around as a prequel to that series btw), but it carved a place for itself in the ‘torture porn’ horror realm.  Director and writer Marcus Dunstan (Patrick Melton also co-wrote both entries) definitely didn’t shy away the red stuff, especially in the 2012 sequel The Collection.  That movie ended with Arkin (Josh Stewart) capturing The Collector, securing him in one of his own red trunks as the film went to the closing credits. But…..what happened after that?

As a fan of both movies, I wanted a sequel.  There’s been far worse in the way of horror being churned out over the last 7 years……so why not bring back our favorite black-masked psychopathic entomologist killer for one more run?  Well guess what…….he’s back, baby!

I’m probably more excited for this than I should be, but I can’t help it.  As far as we know, Josh Stewart will be back and Marcus Dunstan is set to direct again.  That’s about all we do know for now, other than the teaser poster, but I’m sure more info will be creeping in soon about The Collector 3.  Or you can just call it The Coll3ctor like in the poster.  Even with it’s similarities to the Saw films as far as the traps, and considering that franchise has ended with more than a whimper (and keeps limping along) – I’m way more into seeing what The Collector has up his sleeve than anything Jigsaw-related.  Less we forget what The Collector orchestrated at the beginning of The Collection?  (7-year spoiler alert)

Stay tuned for more info on The Collector 3!  And stay out of the dance clubs until then.

So, ‘Halloween’ Is Returning In ‘Halloween Returns’?

Good news for all of you Michael Myers and Halloween fans who are also fans of the 1989 Wes Craven ‘so bad it’s good’ movie, Shocker!  It looks as though the upcoming reboot/redo, Halloween Returns, will indeed have Michael Myers on death row and being sent to the electric chair while two vengeful onlookers watch him about to die.  Horace Pinker, anyone?

I have to say that even after the bad taste that was left in my mouth from Rob Zombie’s Halloween II (I actually didn’t mind the first one), I’m onboard with another Halloween reboot.  The good news is that as previously reported, it won’t be in 3D and looks to be a standalone entry as well.  Directed by Marcus Dunstan (The Collector, The Collection) and also written by him and Patrick Melton, this could surprisingly breathe new life into the franchise IF the following steps are properly taken:

–  Get a good mask.  At least the Rob Zombie films had that going for them.

–  Don’t overthink the plot.  We don’t need any satanic cults running around this time.  We get it….Michael Myers is evil.  It doesn’t need to be overstated.

–  Less is more.  Make it scary.  I’m all for bringing back the subtleness of Michael’s character (popping up in the background of shots, minimal but effect score, etc).

–  No Jamie Lee Curtis cameos, please.  I love the woman, but her time in the Halloween franchise died when she did in that awful Halloween: Resurrection crapfest.

– Speaking of that crapfest – no unnecessary rapper cameos.  My condolences to Busta Rhymes.

Anticipation Alert: The Collection (2012)

Thanks to the torture porn movement of the Hostel and Saw franchises, a little nasty flick called The Collector was spawned in 2009 from writer/director Marcus Dunstan. Given his screenplay credits on the later Saw movies, the influence was apparent on this under the radar gem that was filled with enough gore, cleavage, and insects to keep the average horror fan happy.  We followed Arkin (Josh Stewart) as he plotted a heist at his new boss’ home to repay a debt to his ex-wife.  Unknown to him however was that a masked madman/exterminator had booby-trapped the house and had plans of his own that involved collecting (hence the title) the homeowners and sitting down and playing Lite Brite with them.  Just kidding – he tortured them repeatedly with pliers, fish hooks, and cockroaches.  Yay!

*righty tighty, lefty loosey*

Needless to say, our hero Arkin escapes (spoiler alert!), but then gets captured again at the end.  What a bummer.  Which brings me to the sequel, The Collection, that is coming out later this year and is once again being written and directed by Marcus Dunstan. It picks up where the last left off, and involves Arkin being blackmailed into teaming up with mercenaries to track down our pesky exterminator/torturer and save a hot girl named Elena who has been “collected”.  I’m sure there’s more to it than that, but we’ll just leave that carrot dangling in front of your nose for now.  Expect more nastiness and hopefully some of the great atmosphere and imagery that made the first one stand out as more than just another Saw knockoff.  The torture porn genre may have overstayed it’s welcome and come and gone, but I for one will welcome it back with The Collection.  Check out a still and the international poster below and stay tuned for a trailer soon!
