Tears Of A Clown: RIP Sid Haig

‘Tis a sad day in the horror world, because we have lost the great Sid Haig at the age of 80.  I won’t bother getting into his long career in both television and movies (that’s what IMDB is for), but instead will tell a quick story of when I was lucky to meet and talk to him for the first time.

If you have gone to or frequent horror conventions, then there is a high probability that you saw Sid there.  Usually with his friend Bill Moseley in tow nearby, Sid would have his booth set up with glossy 8X10 pics from his acting career laid out for fans to choose from to be signed (Captain Spaulding being the most popular, of course).  His fee would always remain the same ($20 for a signed photo or poster – $10 to sign anything of your own that you brought), which is rare in the convention circuit.  Oh – and pictures/selfies were always free.  That day I had brought my DVD for The Devil’s Rejects to be signed, and I had actually just started this blog and had some stickers to pass around the convention.

I met Sid and he put his signature on the DVD cover and shook my hand.  Honestly couldn’t have been nicer.  He asked if I wanted a picture and I politely declined, and while I was leaving I gave him one of my Dirty Horror stickers.  As I was walking away, he yelled out “Tony, come here!”  So I went back and he said “You’re gonna do great with the blog – take a pic and I’ll hold up the sticker”.  I honestly kinda froze.  But he held the sticker up, and I took the picture……

And that pretty much was who Sid seemed to be.  Judging from all of the posts on social media today from not just fans, but other acting colleagues, it’s obvious he touched a lot of people.

Now, the end of this story will only further prove my point of the greatness of Sid.  Being that I had brought my own DVD to get signed, the charge was $10.  Unbeknownst to me, I had given Sid a $20 bill.  As I’m walking away again (after getting my picture), I hear “Tony!  Tony!!!“.  I start my walk back to the booth and Sid yells over to me “You gave me a 20, I owe you $10!“.  I just kind of laughed (being that this was the second time I was walking away that Sid yelled out to me), and it made me realize even more that Sid was a pretty amazing guy.  Rest in peace, Sid.

The ‘ASTRONOMICON CONVENTION’ Is Coming To Sterling Heights, Michigan On February 9th-11th!

I love me a good convention.  More specifically, one that showcases the best from the horror AND wrestling worlds!  So, it’s no surprise that I’m a little bummed out I don’t live closer to Michigan because the Astronomicon Convention is happening in just a few weeks and here are some of the big names that will be attending:  Sid Haig (House Of 1000 Corpses), Bill Moseley (House Of 1000 Corpses), Kane Hodder (Friday The 13th Part VII), Kevin Nash (WCW), Booker T (WCW), and more!

What better way than to celebrate the weekend before Valentine’s Day, than with a romantic getaway to the Astronomicon Convention?  That’s right, the convention runs from February 9th-11th and the WWE’s very own Brother Love (Bruce Prichard) will be attendance to spread even more love!  Did I also mention that Sid Haig is supposed to actually be officiating a wedding that Saturday at the convention as Captain Spaulding? ScareLA Convention Coming To Pasadena On August 8th & 9th!

My favorite time of the year is only about 3 months away!  No, not Columbus Day.  And no, not my wedding anniversary.  My apologies to my wife btw…..but I’m talking about Halloween!  And what better way to get yourself into the mood than with a convention that revolves around anything and everything that is Halloween called the ScareLA Convention in Southern California, which is taking place this year in Pasadena at the Pasadena Convention Center on August 8th & 9th.

Now, I have to say that I’ve been the past two years to the ScareLA Convention and can unbiasedly say it’s one of the most fun and entertaining conventions of it’s kind that I’ve experienced.  It really nails the Halloween feel, with tons of exhibits and booths dedicated to the holiday, as well as some actual haunted attractions that you can walk through as well!  You might even see a celebrity or two pop up as well (I was lucky enough to meet Sid Haig last year).  For more details on all of the festivities and for tickets, click HERE for everything that you need to know for the ScareLA Convention this year in Pasadena!

Review: 2014 ScareLA Convention (Los Angeles)

Halloween is only a couple months away!  So to get into the spirit, I headed out to the 2014 ScareLA Convention in downtown Los Angeles this weekend and rubbed elbows with a bunch of ghouls and ghosts.  Oh, and I met Sid Haig too!

Last year, ScareLA was getting it’s feet wet and you could tell that there were definitely kinks to be worked out in the end.  When I arrived on Saturday, I was pretty amazed to see the line literally wrapped around the building all the way down Broadway Avenue.  The word had clearly spread about the convention, and once I got inside (after a fairly long wait) I could see why.  Everything was way bigger and better than last year.

The most notable addition were the free haunted attractions located inside and outside of the building.  It was a nice touch, because nothing says Halloween like going through a spook house and having the shit scared out of you.  Did I mention that there was even a zombie shooting range where you could take out the undead with an airsoft rifle?

ScareLA really stepped it’s game up this year and convinced me and a lot in attendance I’m sure, that they are definitely a force to be reckoned with in the horror convention game.  What sets it apart from other convention experiences that I’ve had, is that the focus is on the fun.  Not a lot of celebrity sightings (except the aforementioned Sid Haig of course), but that’s what makes it unique.  Trust me, you’ll never get bored.

There were seminars, free movie screenings, pumpkin carving classes, and even a show and presentation celebrating the 45th anniversary of Disney’s Haunted Mansion.  Another great aspect of ScareLA is that since it’s centered around Halloween, they encourage people to dress up.  And because of that and everything else mentioned so far, it truly is an original horror convention that you definitely should attend next year if you’re in the LA area.  Now let’s get ready for Halloween!
