Sunday Bloody Sunday: ‘Death By Trombone’ From ‘The Town That Dreaded Sundown’ (1976)

If there’s one thing I say about horror movies nowadays, it’s that there just aren’t enough deaths by brass musical instruments.  In 1976, not only was the world graced with my presence when I was born, but there was a ‘death by trombone’ scene in the movie The Town That Dreaded Sundown.

So, on this week’s Sunday Bloody Sunday, I think it’s only fitting that we spotlight that trombone death scene from 1976.  It’s also very fitting because the remake/reboot/sequel of The Town That Dreaded Sundown was just released as well.  Without spoiling too much, the trombone makes a triumphant return in that one in case you’re wondering.  Ok, Phantom Killer – now take it away and show Peggy how to really play that instrument!

Horror Hijinx: The Best Sleeping Bag Death Scene Ever?

If you read the title of the post, I already know that a lot of you are thinking that I’m about to show you the sleeping bag death scene from Friday The 13th Part VII: The New Blood.  Yes it’s pretty iconic, but I’m here to tell you that it’s NOT the best sleeping bag death scene ever.  I’ll prepare myself now to duck at whatever you’re going to throw at me.

Ok, now that you’re done hurling insults and objects at me – let’s get on with it and see if I can back up my statement.  In 1979, a somewhat little known creature feature called Prophecy was released.  Directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Talia Shire (Rocky), this movie is about a giant mutated bear-type thing that kills people in the forest.  And boy oh boy….it doesn’t discriminate!  Watch what the mutated killing machine does to this poor kid trying to hop away in his zipped up sleeping bag.  Apparently the sleeping bag isn’t the only thing made of feathers.

Told you!

Sunday Bloody Sunday: ‘The Exploding Head Scene’ From ‘Chopping Mall’ (1986)

The Russian roulette moment in The Deer Hunter.  Luke finding out that Darth Vadar is his father in The Empire Strikes Back.  The Mrs. Robinson leg shot in The Graduate.  All of those scenes suck compared to one of the greatest scenes in movie history.  That’s right, all of you other inferior cinematic moments bow down to your master:  Leslie’s exploding head from Chopping Mall!

I’m going to tease you a little more before you can watch the clip.  Actually, I guess you could just scroll down and ignore what I have to say and watch it anyway.  But yes, Chopping Mall (also known as Killbots) is about as 80’s of a horror movie as 80’s horror movies can get.  Stupid plot.  Stupid characters.  Stupid non-scary mall robots.  And some breasts.  But what gives Chopping Mall a leg up on every other horror movie, is it’s amazing exploding head scene.  And it’s a perfect addition to the Sunday Bloody Sunday roster.  Words can’t describe it, so why try.  Click below and realize that after you watch it, your life has just officially changed:
