Great Moments In Jump Scare History: ‘The Woman In White Smacks Back’ From ‘Insidious – Chapter 2’ (2013)

Who is in need of a good jump scare to get your week rolling along???  That’s it?  Just one person?  Ok, well – here is one of my favorite ‘jump scare’ moments in a ‘not so good’ horror movie sequel.  Admittingly, I didn’t care much for Insidious: Chapter 2.  I pretty much loved the predecessor, but the sequel was pretty ho-hum for me.  Except of course…..this jump scare from The Woman In White (no relation to The Lady In Red, but a definite relation to The Bride In Black).  Now – if you haven’t seen the movie or the jump scare, then turn the volume wayyyyyyyy up and wait for it.

Ok, go change your pants now.  That Rose Byrne can sure take a slap though, huh?  Fun fact:  The scare actor playing The Woman In White during a Universal’s Halloween Horror Nights maze for Insidious a few years ago scared the ever-loving shit out of me reenacting this exact scene.

5 Reasons Why ‘The Prodigy’ Gave Me A Horror Boner!

I love surprises (hint, hint for my birthday this year), and I love them even more when they’re a neatly wrapped horror movie with a giant black bow on top.  The recent film The Prodigy was indeed a surprise for me.  The typical ‘go in with low expectations’ kind of thing, where you leave the theater saying “Well, that was way better than I thought it would be“.  Yes, it’s another in a long….long….long line of creepy kid movies – but I dug it.   Continue reading

Jump Scare Sunday: ‘Black Light Fun’ From ‘Lights Out’ (2016)

Now I will admit that although I liked last year’s Lights Out, I didn’t love it…..at least upon my first viewing.  But – I recently watched it again and have to say that there are some genuinely creepy and unsettling moments AND I may have even jumped a few times.  I’m usually jump scare immune, but dammit if this movie didn’t get me a few times.  More specifically, the black light scene below that someone was kind enough to upload onto Youtube.

If you’ve seen it, you know what’s coming.  If not, here’s a slight spoiler alert:  There’s a jump scare that comes in the clip.  Which you should have already known based on the title of this post.  Enjoy and change your pants afterwards!

Great Moments In Jump Scare History: ‘Car Accident’ From ‘Insidious: Chapter 3’ (2015)

Boo!!!!  Ahhh – did you jump?  Probably not unless maybe you’re deaf.  The good ol’ fashioned jump scare.  I can admit it – I’ve had my fair share of moments when I had to check my underwear while watching a horror movie.  They didn’t come up with the phrase ‘scare the shit out of you’ for nothing.  Most jump scares that get me have to do with people lurching out of the shadows or something along those lines.  What usually doesn’t do it for me are car accidents.  That was until Insidious: Chapter 3 came along.  Take a peek below and get your change of underwear ready!

A little harsh with the whole “Come on, lesbo!” line at the beginning.  But anyway – if you hadn’t seen that clip and you didn’t jump when the car accident happened…….then, you sir (or ma’am) are ‘jump scare’ proof.  Obviously the scene was set up for something and I knew that all was not right when Quinn (Stefanie Scott) looks down the road at the creepy figure.  Just wasn’t expecting that damn car!  Anywho – I actually kind of dig Insidious: Chapter 3 (a whole lot more than Chapter 2), and this jump scare is just the cherry on top.  I’m just glad that they’re stopping at Chapter 3 and won’t move on to a Chapter 4……….ummmm – what’s that?  They are making a Chapter 4???  Sonofabitch…….

Great Moments In Jump Scare History: ‘Lawn Work’ From ‘Sinister’ (2012)

Much like the brainless girl who takes her top off and then gets killed minutes later, the jump scare is a necessity in horror cinema.  Sure, it’s a cheap thrill – but that little jolt in my seat can win me over in the end, especially if I’m on the fence about a movie.  It can also make me ponder wearing a diaper, but that’s another embarrassing story.

So many horror movies and so many good jump scares over the years.  But as I was watching 2012’s Sinister last night again, I was reminded of one of the better ones in recent memory.  If you’ve seen Sinister, then you probably know what part I’m talking about.  The creepiest moments of this film are located within the home movies that Ethan Hawke’s character finds while living in his new house.  All of them will make you cringe, but only one has a jump scare worthy of being on the ‘Greatest Moments In Jump Scare History‘ list.  I now present to you:  ‘Lawn Work’

Can We Talk About The Nurse Scene From ‘The Exorcist III’?

Diapers.  You might need one after you watch this clip below.  You know those goofy internet videos that your friends try to get you to watch where everything is calm and then some spooky loud noise and image scares the shit out of you?  The nursing station scene from 1990’s The Exorcist III is the originator of that.  No matter how many times I watch it.  No matter how many times I know what’s coming.  I still jump.  It’s seriously one of the best orchestrated horror jump scares of all time.  Ok, I’ve yammered on long enough – roll it!

Whew.  I actually get a little hot and bothered in a horror kind of way when I watch that.  But enough about my personal issues, the bottom line is that The Exorcist III is a decent sequel, but the nurse scene is on a whole other level. They should have just looped that scene over and over for an hour and a half and intercut a clip or two of George C. Scott for good measure because he’s so awesome.
