……has me conflicted.  But before we discuss why it has me playing tug of war in my mind, let’s watch the trailer and discuss afterwards:

Ok.  Let’s start with the good:

Chloe Grace Moretz is a good choice to play Carrie.  I think she’ll pretty much nail it, as will Julianne Moore as the overbearing and over-religous doting mother.  So we have the fact that they got the casting right, which is always a plus in my book.  Another plus is that it looks good, aside from a little bit of noticeable CGI.  I’m confident as well in director Kimberly Peirce and honestly think it was a smart choice to land a female director to be able to pull the emotion even more out of the Carrie character and throw it up on the big screen.  Not that Brian De Palma was a slouch at that though.  He worked wonders with Sissy Spacek during her menstrual debacle.

Ok.  Now time for the bad:

I really only have one bad thing to say about what I’ve seen of this Carrie remake so far.  Unfortunately, it’s a pretty big bad thing.  I don’t see why they had to remake it.  I feel that I’ve said that a lot about horror remakes lately, but it especially rings true with this one.  The 1976 original is a classic in my opinion.  Piper Laurie (who played the mother) was even nominated for an Oscar.  To me, Sissy Spacek is Carrie and always will be and Piper Laurie is the crazy mother and always will be as well.  They’re iconic roles in my book that can’t be duplicated.  But Hollywood doesn’t care, and the remake got made anyway and I’m sure that technically, it will be an achievement.  I just don’t see the need for it.  But oh well – I’ll be paying to see another horror remake this weekend that I originally didn’t have any faith in (Evil Dead), but grew to have an enormous amount of faith in the end.  Interesting that I ended this piece talking about faith, eh?
