Great Moments In Horror Hair History: Rawhead Rex (1986)

Not many things could upstage a scene in a horror movie where a demonic creature pisses on a priest and “baptizes” him.  But a sweet mullet haircut sure as hell could.

Rawhead Rex is a 1986 hilariously ‘bad but good’ horror movie that was conceived by the master mind of Clive Barker.  I’m not going to get too much into the storyline that revolves around an evil pagan god with big ass teeth tearing some shit up in a little Irish town.  I’m talking about hair here!  And my oh my does Rawhead Rex have a sweet set of locks on that big cranium of his.  The hair definitely has a Gene Simmons kind of texture to it, but if anything – that makes it even more amazing.  So because of that alone, it’s no surprise to proclaim that Rawhead Rex and his hair was indeed a Great Moment In Horror Hair History!

Clive Barker’s ‘Nightbreed’ Finally Getting The Blu-ray Release It Deserves!

Today marks the day that proves your voice can actually be heard.  For years now, fans of Clive Barker’s 1990 film Nightbreed have petitioned both online and in the streets to get a release on Blu-ray/DVD of the version that Clive always intended you to see.  Unfortunately when the movie was released, the studio cut the shit out of it, so what we saw on the big screen and on video was not true to form.  But now, almost 25 years later, we can all dance around and rejoice because the great company Scream Factory and Clive Barker himself are finally bringing us the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed in all of it’s original glory!

I always loved this movie, but when I would watch it, I could tell that there had been heavy studio tinkering involved.  The story itself was original, the creatures mesmerizing, and when you have the great director David Cronenberg playing a sadistic killer who wears a badass mask – how can you go wrong?  The release of this version on Blu-ray/DVD is big news people and Nightbreed has a HUGE following which is only going to make the buzz bigger.  Let’s talk specs real quick, because there are two different options you can go for:

Limited Edition Set:

– Only 5000 numbered sets produced

– 3 Discs on Blu-ray (Unrated Director’s Cut, Original Theatrical Version, Bonus Disc With Loads Of Extras)

– Collector’s book with essays and rare photos

– Slipcase with new artwork approved by Clive Barker

– $79.97 price tag

Special Edition Set:

– Unrated Director’s Cut on Blu-ray with bonus features

– Unrated Director’s Cut on DVD

– Slipcase with new artwork approved by Clive Barker

– $23.93 price tag

If you pre-order the limited edition from Scream Factory HERE right now, you can get a very limited poster and one of the first 1000 numbered copies of the set.  Now, I know that the price tag of $79.97 seems a bit steep, but if you know the hard work and effort that has gone into making this release happen, it’s more than justified (I already pre-ordered mine btw).  Release date is in October, depending on which version you pre-order (limited edition ships two weeks earlier), so head on over to Scream Factory and snatch up your copy of Nightbreed before they’re gone and up on Ebay for twice the amount. Midian fans rejoice!

Did You Know There Were Video Games Based On ‘Nightbreed’? (1990)

Yesterday, I was once again amazed at the marvels of the internet.  Upon doing some deep research for the ugliest women in horror movies, I miraculously stumbled upon the fact that there were two videos games released in conjunction with Clive Barker’s 1990 movie, Nightbreed.  Not since I discovered a similar revelation with the Fright Night video game a little while back have I been so excited about tracking down a Commodore Amiga 500 computer system.

That’s right.  You’re looking at a video game version of Boone up there as he crouches down, apparently because some grenades are coming his way which is insinuated by the “LOOK OUT GRENADES!” warning at the top of the screen.  This video game was entitled ‘Nightbreed, The Action Game‘ and is reminiscent as far as gameplay of the Fright Night game.  And thanks to Youtube, you can watch a walkthrough of the game and see just what you missed if you weren’t one of the very few that actually made an effort to buy a Commodore Amiga 500.

Wow – those grenades are huge!  I don’t remember those from the movie, but I’m nitpicking at this point.  What’s impressive about all of this, is that even though Nightbreed wasn’t a box-office smash, it garnered two games based on the land of Midian.  The second game was more of an interactive title, which fittingly had the name ‘Nightbreed, The Interactive Movie‘.  If you were lucky enough to actually play either of the versions, feel free to give your insight and reviews.  If you weren’t lucky enough to play them, then feel free to look at the closing screenshot below for the wonderful happy ending of Boone and Lori.  Awwwww.

Ummmmmm: Rawhead Rex (1986)

Sometimes you’re watching a horror movie and something happens where you just kind of pause and say “ummmmm…..”.  That’s the best way to describe it when I was about 11 years old and my Dad brought home the Clive Barker helmed, Rawhead Rex.  It’s your standard ‘demon resurrected to bring hell on earth’ type story with a guy running around in a pretty bad costume and makeup taking out the townsfolk left and right.  Oh, and he also stops by the occasional priest to piss on him for a baptism ritual too……

Ummmmmmm……yep – he just pissed on that priest.  And the priest liked it.  And what a stream on that Rawhead Rex, huh?  Impressive.  I remember arguing with someone later in life that this scene actually did occur.  Now thanks to the wonders of Youtube, it’s proven!  Rawhead Rex has some decent gore and I do highly recommend reading the original story by Clive Barker to get a better sense of what they were going for here with this ho-hum of a horror movie.  This is one film that would definitely benefit from a remake by the way.  Unfortunately, this cult classic is not available on DVD, unless you want to pay a ridiculous amount, but we can only hope that one day soon we’ll be able to view this wonderful pissing display in high definition Blu-Ray!  So here’s to you Rawhead Rex, and your monumental piss…….

*We’re still gonna spoon later though, right?*
